The Journey of a Sample
When you provide a blood, urine, or other specimen at DLS, a carefully managed chain of custody begins. Each sample is labelled with a unique identifier at collection, logged into our Laboratory Information System, and assigned to the appropriate analytical department.
Pre-Analytical Processing
Before any analysis takes place, samples are processed to ensure they are in the correct state for testing. Blood samples may be centrifuged to separate serum or plasma. Specimens are inspected for haemolysis, lipemia, or inadequate volume — any of which can affect result accuracy. Samples that do not meet quality criteria are flagged and a repeat collection requested before results are issued.
Analysis
Depending on the test requested, samples pass through our haematology analysers, clinical chemistry platforms, immunology and serology benches, or microbiology incubators. Our automated platforms provide rapid, high-volume throughput for routine panels, while our scientists perform manual reviews on all flagged, abnormal, or critical results.
Authorisation and Reporting
Results are reviewed by qualified laboratory scientists before they are authorised. Any critical values — such as dangerously low haemoglobin or markedly abnormal electrolytes — are communicated directly and immediately to the requesting clinician. Final reports are made available to the referring doctor, and patients may collect printed results from reception.
