Garbage In, Garbage Out
It is a principle every laboratory scientist understands: no amount of analytical precision can rescue a poorly collected sample. At DLS, we invest significantly in our specimen collection unit to ensure every sample we receive is fit for analysis before it reaches the bench.
Common Pre-Analytical Errors
The most frequent causes of sample rejection or result unreliability include haemolysis (red cell destruction caused by poor venepuncture technique or rough sample handling), incorrect tube selection for the tests ordered, insufficient sample volume, and improper storage or transport temperature between collection and receipt at the laboratory.
Some tests are particularly vulnerable. Coagulation studies such as INR and APTT require precise blood-to-anticoagulant ratios. Glucose samples must be processed promptly to prevent glycolysis reducing the measured value.
DLS Collection Standards
Our specimen collection team follow standardised protocols aligned with international best practice. Collection is performed by trained phlebotomists using vacuum tube systems that minimise haemolysis risk. Patients are provided with clear pre-test instructions — including fasting requirements and medication considerations — ahead of their appointment.
If you have questions about how to prepare for a specific test, contact DLS reception at Mater Dei Hospital before your appointment.
